About

Chances are you don't think about independent radio much. Having access to non-commercial radio is like having an older brother or sister who always knows about cool stuff before you do. College and non-commercial radio has long been a breeding ground of taste, culture, and personality. Poll any band, label honcho or commercial radio personality, and you'll find that a huge, almost ridiculous number of 'em got their start at a college station. Recognizing that, Toyota Yaris and Urban Outfitters joined together and created a program that supports and publicizes the importance of non-commercial radio. Thus, Free Yr Radio was born.

Free Yr Radio was built to support indie radio through a series of events developed to generate awareness and funds for a handful of stations.

The whole shebang kicked off at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas on March 14, with a party and show featuring The Rapture, The Pipettes, and DJ Dave P.

In spring a bunch of music's most beloved indie bands are performing free afternoon shows at Urban Outfitters stores in each of our partner station markets. After the bands perform they'll huddle with us and tell us how they would customize a Yaris. We are giving a bunch of Yarises to the stations to use to generate much-needed funds from their listeners.

Free Yr Radio will roll into fall with a CD which will be released and sold exclusively through Urban Outfitters stores and catalogs. All the proceeds from the CD will be divided evenly among our fine partner stations.

There are other cool things throughout the program, like the online video of the bands' shows you'll be able to embed in your MySpace page, or the button-making lab which will travel to each of our local stops, but the real point of Free Yr Radio is to give back to the stations which have given us all so much.

Tune in and Free Yr Radio.
