A program created by Toyota Yaris and Urban Outfitters to support and publicize the importance of independent radio. Free Yr Radio comes to life through a series of events developed to generate awareness and support for a handful of partner stations.

We kicked off Free Yr Radio 2008 at SXSW with a massive party at La Zona Rosa. Hosted by our beloved Austin station, KVRX, the crowd warmed up with some Southern food, a few drinks, and the turntable mastery of DJ Dave P.
Come show time, the crowds flocked in for Times New Viking’s epic lo-fi distortion. Yeasayer was up next, treating the crowd to their signature genre-bustin’ rock. Finally, as the wee hours of the morning crept up, Simian Mobile Disco blew everyone away with their thumping electronic dance tunes and accompanying light show.
By the end of the evening, we had only enough energy left to scribble two words onto our figurative notepad: TOTALLY AMAZING!

White Williams kicked off the Free Yr Radio concert series with a free show in Boston for WERS. More than 200 people hung out in the rain to wait for the performance. But they weren’t just standing there — our Boston partner station WERS plied them with tons of freebies including WERS lip balm, stress radios (so damn cute — picture one of those squeeze balls shaped like a boombox), pens and the latest WERS compilation while talking about the importance of independent radio and WERS.
Earlier in the day, the folks with Ice Cream Man blew through WERS for a tour and showered the staff with free ice cream. They were at the event too, doing what they do best: “slingin’ cream and livin’ the dream”. When White Williams finally took the stage, the slightly soggy crowd let out a collective “Woo hoo!” The band’s 40-minute performance was the perfect beginning to a concert series packed with amazing artists and phenomenal stations.
Free Yr Radio 2008 is officially underway! We can’t wait ‘til Columbus!
OHIO.FM is a small internet-only station based out of the Ohio State campus in Columbus. They “broadcast” strictly over the internet and have a wonderful staff of DJs who do a fair share of footwork to help promote the station and build awareness on and around the Ohio State campus. Free Yr Radio decided to join in and help them out as well, hooking them up with a station-hosted free concert by !!! on June 14 at the local Urban Outfitters.
As people lined up, the OHIO.FM street team dove into their pitch, chatting about what it means to be a DJ and OHIO.FM’s take on the future of independent radio. When people weren’t stepping out of line to grab a free ice cream bar from the Ice Cream Man Yaris or getting their photo taken in the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris, they were chatting it up with DJs and eagerly awaiting entrance to the !!! show.
Once on stage, the band gave a few shout outs to the station and Free Yr Radio before playing songs off their latest album, Myth Takes, out now on Warp Records. The more than 250 people in attendance danced like crazy as they enjoyed the free show. We think the pictures speak for themselves…
Seattle’s KEXP and Free Yr Radio teamed up for a killer rock show featuring Mudhoney + No Age in the KEXP parking lot. More than 500 people came out and enjoyed a beautiful summer evening filled with free frozen treats from Ice Cream Man, photo strips from the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris, and music provided by two of Sub Pop’s most exciting acts.
The outstanding KEXP DJs kicked things off by announcing the dynamic duo that is No Age. Complete with stage diving, No Age cruised through their blistering set and played numerous tracks from their new album, Nouns, including “Eraser,” “Teen Creeps” and “Miner”.
As the sun began to set behind the Space Needle, longtime local favorites Mudhoney took the stage. After starting off the set with “The Money Will Roll Right In,” they went on to rip through classics like “Touch Me I’m Sick” and tracks from their new album The Lucky Ones. Mudhoney rocked so hard that they blew out the main speakers for a short while. What a show!!!
Enjoy some photos from Seattle:
Independent radio favorite The Current and Free Yr Radio took over the Minneapolis Urban Outfitters to throw a party featuring Yeasayer. Approximately 350 people braved the sticky 95° heat, so everyone was especially stoked to discover Ice Cream Man handing out free frozen treats to all. Fans also had a chance to get their pictures taken inside the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris (check ‘em out here).
After the ice cream, photos, and fans interacting with the gregarious staff from 89.3 FM The Current, the show was underway. Yeasayer cruised through their set, displaying an amazing combination of guitar, bass, drums, synth, and vocal harmony.
Not interested in going quietly into the night, Yeasayer came back out for an encore performance that left everyone sweaty, content, and exhausted. It didn’t take long to finish off the Ice Cream Man’s supplies after that set!

Princeton, New Jersey's own WPRB hosted an amazing Free Yr Radio show at the Urban Oufitters store in Philadelphia's University City neighborhood featuring sets by The Secret Machines and DJ Dave P.
On a beautiful summer night in Philly, it was no surprise that fans, taxi drivers and policemen were all VERY excited to visit the Ice Cream Man before and after the concert. Fans also took advantage of the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris and the button making table. Look for the photo booth photo strips to be posted on the GOODmatters page in the coming days.
The show was kicked off by a killer set from Philly native and birthday boy, DJ Dave P. After Dave's set, The Secret Machines came out and thundered through their set. With monsterous hooks and seriously one of the biggest bass drums I've even seen on stage, The Secret Machines left everyone happy.
For some pics of the Philly show, look below:
Wow. Omaha sure knows how to party! Free Yr Radio partnered with 89.7 The River to put together probably the best Sunday night party ever, featuring Dan Deacon and local favs Flowers Forever at The Slowdown.
We started the evening with our beloved Ice Cream Man handing out sweet treats and had fans stiking a pose in the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris . Check back soon to see all the images from the photo booth. They will be posted on the GOODmatters page.
The show began with Flowers Forever cruising through their set and playing crowd favorites like "American Dream," which is still stuck in my head. Following Flowers Forever was Dan Deacon and his table of toys out to the center of the dance floor. With everyone crowded around him (he even had people watch/dance from the stage) he began his set. We ended up doing a dance-off competition, and giant ring of high fives and even a human tunnel to dance through. You really had to be there for the full effect, but the photos will help give you an idea. SO. MUCH. FUN!

Our friends at KRCL were our excellent hosts for the Free Yr Radio show in Salt Lake City featuring none other than Tokyo Police Club.
We started the day with a stop at the University of Utah with the Ice Cream Man to spread the good word and (of course) hand out some frozen treats. From there we headed to the Urban Outfitters store and continued with the ice cream treats along with our button making table and the ever-popular GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris. Check out your mug shots here.
Tokyo Police Club put on an amazing show, playing a ton of tracks from their new album Elephant Shell, and were even kind enough to stick around and sign the Tokyo Police Club posters handed out after the show.
For some pics of the show, look below:
Since 1977 San Francisco has been blessed with the fiercely independent radio station 90.3 KUSF. Our friends at KUSF were our gracious hosts for the garage rock masters King Khan & Friends for the San Francisco leg of the Free Yr Radio campaign.
We met up with the Ice Cream Man at the University of San Francisco and gave out KUSF swag and ice cream treats to students and staff alike. On our way downtown we met up with King Khan himself at the Amoeba Records on Haight Street to pass out ice creams. From there we headed to the Urban Outfitters store on Powell Street and continued with the ice cream treats along with our button making table and the ever-popular GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris. Check out your mug shots here.
King Khan’s friends for the show turned out to be special guests, the recently reunited Gris Gris. The guys put on a great show featuring tracks like Desert Mile and Ghetto Love, much to the crowds appreciation.
For some pics of the show, look below:
KUCI, 89.9 FM, has been providing Orange County with cutting edge music since 1968, and they did it again in a big way with the Free Yr Radio show featuring Jamie Lidell inside the Urban Outfitters at the LAB.
We had a great crowd lined up to see the show, and made sure to keep them happy with our button making station and by feeding them free ice cream from the Ice Cream Man’s own Yaris, Bessita. Good times were also had inside the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris where people piled in for their free photo strip. Check out your mug shots here.
After a great set from KUCI’s own DJ Jeremy from Disco, For Your Health, Jamie Lidell and his band took the stage. Jamie and the gang played most of the tracks from his latest album, Jim, including crowd pleasers like Another Day, Where’d You Go and Multiply. Jamie Lidell even reached into his electronica bag of tricks to do a full-on jam with Andre, his insanely talented sax player, who was playing the “magic stick” (some sort of electric sax contraption). Those boys can wail.
For some pics of the show, look below:
Our friends at WVUM, 90.5 FM, have been spreading great new music across the University of Miami for years, and they did it again with a FREE live show in South Beach feature The Walkmen for Free Yr Radio.
People strolled in off the beach to the Urban Outfitter on Collins Avenue for a little free ice cream from the Ice Cream Man, free photo strips from the GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris and, of course, a free concert. Check out your photo booth mug shots here.
The Walkmen took the stage and cruised through an impressive set that included tracks from their latest album You & Me like In the New Year and I Lost You. The gang even stuck around to meet the fans and sign autographs on the commemorative show posters.
For some pics of the show, look below:
Straight out of Poughkeepsie, New York, WVKR 91.3 FM came down to New York City to join Free Yr Radio and throw a monster of a CMJ showcase show.
WVKR’s showcase show at CMJ was by far the most anticipated show on Wednesday night, with people packing inside Pianos and hanging out front all night. Event with temperatures in the 40s, the Ice Cream Man was still working his magic and spreading frozen treats to the masses while our GOODmatters Photo Booth Yaris was packed full of curious concert-goers. Don’t forget to check out your photos here.
The showcase lineup included Chairlift, The King Left, Hey Champ, BM Linx and The Pragmatics. Each band was amazing and the closing set by Chairlift left no doubt what all the buzz was about. Definitely check out their single Bruises and their latest album Does You Inspire You.
For some pics of the show, look below:
Having formed Chairlift in Boulder, CO, Aaron Pfenning, Patrick Wimberly and Caroline Polachek didn’t linger there long. By 2007, they are Brooklyn based and drawing inspiration from their new surroundings, playing shows with a thriving society of experimental pop magicians including MGMT, Yeasayer and Mixel Pixel. Their sound develops into a hypnotic yet tongue-in-cheek style of synth-pop.
The music that inspired the Walkmen to compose You and Me follows in a tradition of song writing that goes back to early rock ‘n’ roll: the intimacy and energy of Elvis Presley’s and Buddy Holly’s early recordings, and the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. And it carries on through people like Bob Marley and Randy Newman and on to bands like The Pogues and The Modern Lovers - the sort of songs that are very much a product of their time and place while firmly rooted in tradition. The vocals were performed live right in the room with the full band, and sometimes a horn section too.
Who is this manic Master of Ceremonies who openly confesses to the two grand black bohemians said to be lunatic Sun Ra and George Clinton, and whose stagings certainly remind us of a young Herman Sonny Blount and his Solar Arkestra? King Khan is born in Montreal in 1977, being the son of immigrants from India. The Khan siblings (his majesty, Lil’ Brother Gumbo and Sister Cocobutter) inherit far more than mere musical talent: “My great grandfather was the Johnny Thunders of the sitar. He played but never recorded anything and became a serious opium addict. My father tried to play sitar but chose the fast life over that and wound up down and out and addicted to cocaine. My mother can play harp like Bob Dylan.”
Hard to believe that the bespectacled self-confessed music nerd who’d grown up fetishising samplers and boxes that went squelch, could belt it out like a Berry Gordy discovery circa 1961. And if you’d seen him live there was another glimpse of the old Jekyll-Hyde routine. Slyly self-deprecating gent becomes relentless sonic showman. The audience were there to dance, and now the man wrapped in gold lamé is crooning, spluttering, laughing, transforming words into sounds, noise into signal, a body-rocking beat conjured out of nowhere, and then over that, a rousing harmony. On the edge between control and chaos, Jamie turns music inside out – and is an exhilarating experience.
“The band has always been more than our individual egos; we’re no less The Secret Machines now than we’ve ever been,” says Brandon Curtis. When his brother, Ben Curtis, left the band in early 2007, Brandon and drummer Josh Garza knew this didn’t mean the end. The energy and emotion that The Secret Machines fans responded to over the last decade, and continue to seek, was intact. Rather than pull the plug, they carried on with their towering third album, Secret Machines.
Dan Deacon has garnered a reputation in the underground as an intense performer and classic showman. The table top full of pedals, a sine wave generator, vocoder and casio blasting through the PA, joined by a makeshift light board with various bulbs and green skull strobe light, make his all out dance-til-you-drop performance a complete experience. But it isn't all fancy feet and bouncy beats. Deacon is a classically trained composer with a Masters degree in electro-acoustic composition. He has released 7 albums from 2003 to 2006, but those self-produced recordings do not contain the vocal-based experimental pop that he has fine-tuned in live performance. His latest full length, Spiderman of the Rings is the first album bridging the gap between party performer and genuine composer.
When !!! turned Stephen Merritt’s morose indie staple “Take Ecstasy With Me” into a eight-minute long acid house classic that dive-bombed out of club speakers worldwide, it was easily one of the best singles of 2005. But now this dancefloor-destroying Pan-American eight-piece have taken their trademark dance-funk sound off into previously unimaginable new territories. The ten tracks on their third album, Myth Takes, are more dense, layered and groovy than ever before. It’s also no exaggeration to say that there is no music like this being made anywhere else on the planet at the moment. With Myth Takes, !!! have stretched themselves so far that they’ve become truly peerless.
Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney, yep Mudhoney, is back in vinyl and digital action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band’s eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking. The Lucky Ones redefines stripped-down, “back 2 basics” ramalama, certainly when it comes to Mudhoney’s recent past. This new one is deliberately and aggressively raw.
No Age: the name alone suggests multiple meanings and possible interpretations—timeless, ageless, anonymous, free from restriction, something positive from something negative… a profound strength in its simplicity. Likewise, the Los Angeles duo consisting of drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt and guitarist Randy Randall is many things at once even as it embraces its minimalism. Their live shows are an exploration of possibilities: a guitar laid over a resonating drum head, effect loops woven together like beautiful harmonies, pop songs as performance art, a duo that sounds like the gale force of rock history delivered through a wind tunnel.
24-year-old Joe Williams, noise-rock dilettante and White Williams' mastermind, made a name for himself with the release of his debut album, Smoke, and his extensive touring of the U.S. with Girl Talk, Dan Deacon and Battles. Recorded in various sublets over two years in Cleveland, Cincinnati, New York, and San Francisco, using a laptop, analog synths and a mutable selection of studio equipment, White Williams' Smoke is nostalgic, laid back and colorful art-pop.
In the late 90s, James Ford and Jas Shaw joined fellow Manchester University students Simon Lord and Alex MacNaughten to form a band they dubbed Simian. As a side project, Ford and Shaw booked DJ slots while touring, and jokingly called that act “Simian Mobile Disco.” The name stuck, and as Ford and Shaw moved away from rock and into electronic, Simian Mobile Disco became their primary gig. Today the duo is known for their electrifying party dance tunes and live shows.
Upon the release of Yeasayer’s All Hour Cymbals, the band caught everyone by surprise for their seemingly indefinable play on genres we once found so static and rigidly limiting. Each song is as unique and dynamic as the individuals that make up the band: Yeasayer was formed by half a barbershop quartet and then followed by a rhythm section. “2080” and “Sunrise” are some of our favorite tunes from the past few months and are definitely worth a download.
In their Matador Records debut release, and their third long-play overall, Times New Viking set out on a new journey when Rip It Off hit stores this past January. Known for their epic distortion and lo-fi sound recordings, Times New Viking hails from Columbus, OH and features Adam Elliot on percussion and vocals, Beth Murphy on keyboards and vocals, and Jared Phillips on guitars.
DJ Dave P has been producing Making Time since its inception in May of 2000. To this day, Making Time remains one of America's most acclaimed and longest-running indie dance parties. He is also known for his hyped DJ sets, his skilled remixes and his label, RVNG International, which releases specialty edit 12” singles for DJs.
