On August 14th and 15th, Free Yr Radio teamed up with WNRN to bring you one-of-a-kind performances from Colorado’s biggest music festival, Mile High Music Festival. Our tent was PACKED with performances from Ozomotli, Amos Lee, Donovan Frankenreiter (with John Oats), Oh My Stars, Punch Brothers, and Joe Purdy.

And big thanks to partner station WNRN for all their hard work over the weekend. Check out some of the awesome performances on their YouTube page — they’re almost at two millions views!

Far Out at Outside Lands

After a sweaty ol’ time at Lollapalooza and Mile High, Free Yr Radio was ready to cool off at Outside Lands with KUSF. As we mentioned before, it was KUSF’s 33 1/3 birthday, and we had a great time dancing with bands like The Budos Band, Quinn de Veaux and the Blues Beat Review. KUSF even interviewed some local chefs! To celebrate KUSF’s big milestone, bars and businesses across San Francisco played their broadcast all weekend long, bringing Free Yr Radio and KUSF to a whole new audience.

c) The initial broadcast of KUSF, the coolest independent radio station in San Francisco!

That’s right – KUSF began broadcasting on April 25, 1977, which makes this weekend their 33rd 1/3 birthday!

Lovely Lovely Lollapalooza

What’s three days long, features over a hundred bands, and is hotter than skinny jeans in the summer? Lollapalooza!

We had an awesome time with partner station WLUW. Highlights included a special performance with The Antlers, and Jamie Lidell leaping off the stage for an audience sing-along. (Thanks for the extra-long set, too, Jamie!)

Keeping It Real with WNRN

Who’s the #1 band you can’t wait to see at Mile High? For WNRN, it’s bluegrass band Punch Brothers. A few months ago, Punch Brothers visited the WNRN studios and treated the station to an outrageous cover of The Strokes’ “Reptila.” Watch what happens when bluegrass meets garage rock:

WNRN also partners with Sound of Music Recording Studio and music producer David Lowery to host on-air performances with bands performing in the Richmond area. So far the series Radio VA has hosted Minus the Bear, Brandi Carlile, and a special performance by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros:

Free Yr Radio at Siren Music Festival!

Last weekend Free Yr Radio visited the Siren Music Festival in Coney Island!

We were joined by the awesome folks at WUSB 90.1 FM, who broadcast live performances and interviews from Siren all day long.

WUSB broadcasts out of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY, and features an eclectic lineup of music and news. On Thursday we visited their studios and met the team:

On Saturday we set up the tent and arrived ready to rock (even in the 90 degree weather):

WUSB broadcasted live interviews with Cymbals Eat Guitars and Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Fans were treated to exclusive performances by Wye Oak, Apache Beat, Screaming Females, and a special cover of New Order’s “Temptation” by Surfer Blood.

Toyota’s Free Yr Radio is back! This year we’re taking our mission to draw attention and support to independent, non-commercial radio to the nation’s best music festivals, including Siren Fest, Lollapalooza, Mile High, Outside Lands, Bumbershoot, the Voodoo Experience, and CMJ.

At each stop on the tour, Free Yr Radio will partner with independent stations to host the Toyota Free Yr Radio Broadcast Stage where the stations broadcast live from inside the festivals, sharing and recording special live performances and artist interviews. Festival-goers can also enjoy fun activities like a Corolla photo-booth and a make-your-own Shrinky Dink station!
